Health
Strengthening health CSOs that bridge national policy and last-mile community care across Zambia.
Overview
Zambia's health sector is undergoing rapid development, driven by expanded primary healthcare goals, digital health records, public health surveillance, and community-driven wellness programs. However, human resource constraints remain a critical bottleneck across primary, secondary, and tertiary care facilities.
Zambia's public health ecosystem is navigating a complex landscape. While significant progress has been made in primary healthcare delivery, maternal care, and epidemic control, critical systemic bottlenecks continue to challenge healthcare access and delivery across the country.
Key Challenges
The Pivotal Role of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs)
Civil society — spanning local NGOs, faith-based health networks (such as CHAZ), and Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) — acts as the essential bridge between government policy and last-mile community delivery. CSOs drive critical action across four pillars:
Direct Community Outreach & Service Delivery
Extending primary health education, mobile screening units, maternal-child nutrition, and epidemic response directly to underserved populations.
Accountability & Policy Advocacy
Monitoring health budget allocations, tracking drug availability at facility levels, and advocating for human rights, sexual reproductive health (SRHR), and universal health coverage.
Data Collection & Field Research
Conducting baseline surveys, tracking local disease trends, and providing evidence-based reports that inform national health strategies.
Community Empowerment
Training Community Health Workers (CHWs) and volunteers to build long-term local resilience.
How ZIN Helps
The Zambia Internship Network (ZIN) partners with health CSOs across the country to deploy international talent into core operational areas.
