Environment

Building climate resilience for Zambia's communities on the frontlines of the climate emergency.

Environment Sector
ZIN Focus Area

Overview

The 2023–2024 El Niño drought affected over 9 million people and destroyed ~1 million hectares of maize. Zambia loses 250,000–300,000 hectares of forest annually. ZIN supports the Green Economy by placing Environmental Science, Engineering, Finance, GIS, and Data Analysis interns into environmental NPOs.

Key Challenges

El Niño drought affected 9 million+ people in 2023–24
Energy deficits from falling Kariba Dam water levels
250,000–300,000 hectares of forest lost annually

How ZIN Helps

Matching interns in Environmental Science, Engineering, Finance, and GIS to design water purification systems, access Green Bonds, and map flood-prone areas.

Success Indicator

Resilience Index — households adopting climate-smart practices or gaining access to renewable energy through partner organizations.
